Artex Ceiling Plastering in Woking

Swirls, stipples and other textured Artex finishes were common in homes for decades. Most people now want a clean, flat ceiling. We cover Artex ceilings and walls with plaster, or overboard them, to give you a smooth surface without scraping the texture off.

Can you plaster over Artex?

Yes. In most cases the textured surface is prepared, the high points are knocked back, and the ceiling is coated and skimmed until the pattern is fully hidden. On heavily textured or damaged ceilings, fixing new plasterboard over the top and skimming can be the better route.

A note on asbestos

Some older textured coatings contained asbestos. Covering it over — rather than sanding or scraping it — avoids disturbing it. If you think your ceiling may contain asbestos, it's sensible to have a sample tested before any work. We'll talk this through with you before we start.

What to expect

The room is cleared and protected, light fittings are loosened or removed by an electrician where needed, and the ceiling is prepared, coated and skimmed. Once dry, it's ready for a mist coat and paint like any newly plastered ceiling.

No. Artex is normally covered rather than removed, which is cleaner and avoids disturbing the old coating.
