Skim or overboard?

If the ceiling is sound and just marked or cracked, a skim coat is usually enough. Where it's sagging, loose or badly damaged, the better option is to fix new plasterboard over (or in place of) the old ceiling, then skim. We'll explain which suits your ceiling before work starts.
