Wall Skimming in Woking

Skimming is a thin finishing coat of plaster applied over existing, sound walls and ceilings. It's the quickest way to turn patched, uneven or previously papered walls into a clean, smooth surface ready for decorating — without the cost and disruption of a full replaster.

Signs your walls need skimming

If the plaster underneath is still firmly attached, a skim will usually sort out:

  • Walls that look patchy or wavy once painted
  • Marks and damage left after removing wallpaper
  • Lots of small filled holes from shelves, pictures and fixings
  • Hairline cracks across walls and ceilings
  • Painted textured finishes you want smooth

What skimming involves

We protect the room, remove or loosen fittings where needed, and treat the surface so the new plaster bonds properly — especially over painted walls. Any damaged corners are fixed with new beading. The skim is applied in two thin coats and polished up to a smooth finish.

A typical room can often be skimmed in a day, though larger rooms and ceilings take longer. We'll give you a realistic timescale with your quote.

Skimming vs replastering

Skimming only works when the existing plaster is sound. If it's blown or crumbling, the skim will crack and fail along with it. We check the walls first and will tell you honestly if a section needs replastering. Read more on our plastering page.

After skimming

Thin skim coats dry faster than a full replaster — often within a few days in a warm, ventilated room. Once it's an even pale colour all over, apply a mist coat before your normal paint.

Yes, as long as the paint and plaster underneath are sound. The surface is prepared first so the skim bonds properly.
